Montessori School ages 2 1/2 to 6 years
Dedicated to your child's individual needs. |
Sharon Stone Such
a special bond develops when you enable a child to organize their
thinking and begin to understand the world around them. Teaching a
child to read delights my heart anew each time I witness it. |
NewsWe are sorry to report that Sharon has recently retired. At this point she may accept some teaching work, please contact her for further information. Meet Sharon StoneMrs. Stone has thirty years' experience teaching preschool children. As director and teacher, she provides educational continuity for students who enter and complete this program. Over several years, that continuity deepens her sensitivity and understanding of each student's abilities. Mrs.
Stone has a BA in Elementary Education from the University of Florida.
She is credentialed and Mrs. Stone successfully opened Montessori schools in North Carolina and Tennessee. She has taught locally for twenty years. Above and Beyond Montessori school was established in Largo in 1994 The History of Montessori
Dr.
Maria Montessori was an Italian physician and educator in the late
1800s. A forerunner of her time,
she opposed the rigid teaching techniques used in Europe. Dr. Montessori
observed and studied the development of young children. She drew
remarkable conclusions, many of which are confirmed by modern research.
Here are a few: •
From conception to age 4, the individual develops 50% of his mature
intelligence, from age 4 to 8 the child develops another 30%. This
suggests a rapid growth of intelligence in the early years and the great
influence of the environment during this development. •
Montessori believes the hand is the chief teacher of the child. In order
to learn, there must be concentration, and the best way for a child to
concentrate is by attending to a task performed with the child's own
hands. • Children experience periods of intense fascination for learning a particular skill, such as putting objects in order and counting. It is easier for a child to learn a specific skill during the corresponding sensitive period, than at any other time in life. A Nurturing PhilosophyAbove and Beyond is a Montessori preschool devoted to creating life-long learners. While a thirst for knowledge lies in us all, each child is unique. Every parent knows how naturally receptive a young child is. Sharon Stone's classroom maximizes this potential. |

Children 2 - 6 are kinesthetic learners. In other
words, they learn with their hands.
The systematic presentation of the unique kinesthetic Montessori
materials promotes order, coordination, concentration and independence. Sharon Stone explains, "Thirty years of teaching experience has taught me the normal sequence of child development. The freedom of a multi-age classroom allows each child to progress at their own pace. One child may build the tower at 4 years old, while another may be 4' '2. Learning is linked to the materials, rather than age-related expectations. The child's self-confidence blossoms and so too, does the eagerness to learn more.'' Following a child's internal development clock leads
the teacher to know the right time to provide a new lesson to a child.
Difficulty increases only slightly from the prior lessons.
This building of knowledge and skills, step by step, fills the
child with a sense of successful independence, or independent learning. |
|
Early LearningEmotional Self-learning is promoted with lessons encouraging independence and concentration. The classroom is calm and orderly. Self-confidence and self-esteem are nurtured because the materials increase in difficulty gradually. Intellectual Self-motivation grows with materials for 2 1 /2 to 6
year olds. These include sorting objects by color to categorizing rods
by weight, to building a tower of blocks in sequential order. Other
lessons are language development, math, reading, geography and cultural
topics. Learning is an exciting and joyful experience in a
non-competitive atmosphere. |
Montessori theory believes manipulating materials by hand teaches best. These students quantify the number 100 by counting and holding 10 bead bars of 10 units each. |
Growing
Physical The classroom materials aim at developing fine motor skills. With Montessori, the hand is called the chief teacher. Students also build focus by manipulating lessons by hand. Targeted playground equipment strengthens muscle coordination and neurological development. Social Small class size creates a respectful, cooperative
atmosphere and provides more one-on-one attention between student and
teacher. The mixed age group encourages younger children to observe, and
older children to mentor. Spiritual Self-esteem and spirituality are nurtured. Children learn the love of God and the love of the Son of God, Jesus through the principles of the Bible.
